francisco tonight for a pair of big money fundraisers. good evening. i'm ama dates. carolyn johnson has the night off. >> and i'm dan ashy loo. president obama is with us in the bay area to collect cashe p. he will leave with millions from the democrats. but he will also leave with a sense of frustration over a controversial issue. john alstoth is live outside the inter continue continental hotel where the president is spending the night. >> first off traffic is an absolute mess around the inter continental hotel. howard street is closed between fourth and fifth and traffic is being flushed to fourth street. this will be the case into the morning rush. the president got to the hotel about two hours ago after a lucrative evening. the presidential limo pulled up and a shaw rowed was pulled

shut in san francisco. two blocks away, hundreds of demonstrators did their best to voice their opposition to the proposed keystone oil pipeline project that would run from canada to the gulf coast. >> it is too late. it is already too late. we need to be reforming all of our energy and policy right now. >> inside oil heir and his wife were hosting a dinner for 75 guests who had to pay $32,000 each for the opportunity to get the president's ear. >> i think you can't help the 1% if you are elected president, but can be a part of 99%. >> they are raising money for the congressional democrats. his first fundraising stop was sea cliff where traffic was blocked near billionaire hedge fund manager tom styre. a vocal opponent of the keystone project. the cost up to $34,000 a

ticket. >> all you do is write a check. it is that easy. >> how much are you a check for? >> for $5,000 and he is worth every bit of it. >> how is that good for the average person who will not have $5,000 or $34,000 to spend? >> it is terrible for the average person. this is not a system you will ever hear me defending. but are you not going to changing it unless you take back the house of representatives. >> with the day's fundraising over, president obama's motorcade arrived at the inter continental hotel after 9:00 tonight. the president will decide later this year whether or not to go ahead with the keystone project. at those fundraisers he was said to ease concerns about the project as well as his commitment to climate change issues. abc7 news. >> here is some more background information. it is the host of the first fundraiser. styre is a former hedge fund trader turned philanthropist. he is on forbes list of richest people in america and is currently worth $1.4 billion. he and his wife, katherine

taylor, were among the first to sign the giving pledge in 20110 promising to give half of their wealth to charity. they had given more than $1 billion so far including a $40 million donation to stanford university. he is a democratic activist. he had spent millions trying to torpedo the oil pipeline and has been one of president barack obama's prolific fundraisers. >> now president obama has a brunch and lunch reception on his schedule in atherton on the peninsula. the brunch will cost you $32,400 and the lunch $1,000 a plate. now if you want to have your picture with president obama, that's an extra 5,000 plus 2500 for each additional person in the photo. another 20,000 will get you into a coffee clatch with the president and his host. we have live coverage of the peninsula stops on abc7 morning news at 4:30 and on our midday newscast at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. stay here with us. right now a band of showers is just off the coast.

hill, polk, gulch and chinatown. no word on the cause. pg&e are working on a fix. an annual event in san francisco is getting new scrutiny after a very serious accident. it is called the bring your own big wheel race. but this weekend's race ended in tragedy. alan wang is live on potrero hill with the story you will see only on abc7 news. alan? >> dan, this is one of seven sharp turns along vermont street earning the reputation as the world's most crook cede street. crooked street. it started out as a small race in 2006 and quickly grew to a major event that lead to a major accident. >> everybody watch out please. >> it happened quickly around a blind corner on the last turn of the annual bring your own big wheel race. 45-year-old shuber suffered a serious head injury. >> if she hadn't gone into emergency surgery when we got to the hospital she would have died. >> she had a fractured skull even though at the scene she

was conscious as bystanders rushed to help her. >> my wife was there and taking pictures and all of that stuff. she thought it was over and walked across to see my daughter. >> the police told them they would not file a report because this happened on a closed race course. >> if you are walking across a closed race course and you get hit, it is kind of your fault. i don't know. that's the position they took. >> organizers of the race could not speak on camera, but they sent a statement 8ing the guy who hit the first woman felt terrible. she just walked right in front of him and he couldn't avoid her. >> you take on certain risks when you are in an environment where things can happen. she certainly had to be aware if she was watching the race. >> residents along vermont street say race organizers have gone out of their way to ensure the safety of participants playing hey hay bails and directing traffic. >> considering how have you done it i don't know what they could do to make it better.

they seem to have a pretty good policy. you weren't having big people and little people together. >> they sign a waiver in case of injury and he lives along the course and says the majority of injuries have been minor up until now. >> but they are typically among the by standers and the spectators because of the whole not paying attention and not looking at the course and the quickness with which the riders come up. >> the race has grown from 30 people in 2006 to more than a thousand this weekend. raising the chances of more serious injuries. this weekend's incident takes the big your own big wheel event to a new level. >> she is expected to survive her serious injury. her husband says he is not interested in a lawsuit, but he believes there is room for safety improvements. live in san francisco, alan wang, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. new at 11:00, a touching

tribute tonight for a college student killed in front of his san francisco home. 19-year-old jacob was shot in front of his home in the mission district early saturday morning. tonight his family, friends and former high school football teammates gathered in front of his family's home for a prayer service. archbi at archbishop reardon high school before going to lewis and clark college in portland. >> the sports man ship of his teammates all being here and everybody rallying behind him and lifting up his family members that are grieving right now. >> investigators think the shooter mistook him for a gang member. so far no one has been arrested. a santa clara county paramedic remains in critical condition after being shot in the head yesterday. 34-year-old quinn boyer is being treated at highland hospital in oakland. boyer was shot yesterday on keller avenue in oakland. investigators say the shooter got out of another car and opened fire on boyer, hitting

him at least twice. boyer sped off, crashing into a ravine. now, the shooter is still on the loose. investigators hope to talk with boyer when his condition improves. his fellow paramedics meantime, they are certainly used to seeing tragic situations, but it is difficult when a co-worker is the victim. >> they deal with tragedy on a daily basis. it is their job. they are there to help people. but when it hits one of their own it becomes a whole other story. >> counselors have been made available to boyer's co-workers. increased tensions between the u.s. and north korea. up next, the new threat from the north and how the u.s. is responding. >> also, burglary up and car thefts too and police can do little to stop it. how neighbors are fighting back. >> and a spring storm is on the move. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the system on live doppler 7hd. >> all of that is coming up and then on "jimmy quip

aning from new warning from north korea. a few hours ago the army said it secured approval to launch a nuclear strike against the united states. north korea isn't believed to have the capability to actually do that, but a missal could easily reach seoul, south korea. >> they have rach cheted up their rhetoric and some of the actions they have taken over the last few weeks present a real and clear danger. >> the pentagon is now deploying a missal defense system to guam. the north is blocking south koreans from crossing the border to a jointly operated park. the troops have been put so high alert. experts confirm that north korea has begun construction at a plutonium reactor. >> and to a different security. crime staw ties sticks are out, and it is not looking good in one south bay

neighborhood. property crimes including burglary and auto theft are up significantly. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is in san jose with the story. >> reporter: park young is now armed with a state-of-the-art alarm system. >> armed, away, exit now. >> reporter: it is the first time he has owned one and he feels it is an unfortunate sign of the times. >> a lot of the neighbors have got alarms. cars have been broken into. just this week a car was broken into. >> reporter: according to the san jose police department in the first two months of 2012 there were 811 burglaries. in the same period this year there were 918. meantime in the first two months of 2012, 1,191 cars were stolen, and in the first two months of this year there was a 53% jump in vehiclets. >> i thefts. >> it is concerning. we as a profession, our job is to drive the numbers down and to keep crime low.

to have people walk down the street or live in the city without having fear. >> police blame staffing cuts as part of the problem. most of the burglary unit merged with the patrol division which they say is still too small, and so many residents are turning to these. >> alarm used to be a luxury. now it is a necessity. >> the alarm company can't keep up with the demand in san jose. there is a month wait. >> it is pretty amazing. we haven't seen anything like this in my 30 years. every day we are getting numerous calls and they want the systems now. people are scared. >> according to the silicon valley alarm association, posting a surveillance or alarm system sign like this candy ter aglar by 15 to 20%. in san jose, lisa amin go legion, abc7 news. >> 7 on your side's tax hotline was a big success tonight. a team of accountants answered 364 calls tonight.

antioch made it to 78 degrees. half moon bay, the only location where the fog kept the temperature down 59 degrees. 74 in san francisco. you can say goodbye to that. we are going to go from the warmth to wet weather. right now the view from the high definition sutro camera looking toward san francisco. we do have fog and low clouds and the temperatures right now, san francisco 50 degrees. it is 55 in san jose and 50 currently in half moon bay. here are the highlights. wet for the morning commute. showers for the afternoon and the clouds will linger as we head into the weekend. here is a look at the storm. pacific satellite picture. you can see the cold front is approaching. as it is getting closer, we are already seeing the cloud cover. the rain will arrive after midnight. here is a computer animation of what it will look like. around 3:00 a.m., you will start to see the rain approaching the coast, and then as we head into 5:00 a.m., some moderate rain showing up around the north bay here.

some could reach down to san francisco and oakland. be prepared for a messy morning commute. 9:00 a.m., still showers going pretty numerous at this hour, and then really becoming scattered in nature for the evening commute. rainfall tapers as we head to 11:00 p.m. here is what the totals will look like. the highest total is expected to be in the north bay. a quarter to an inch expected. central bay a 10th to a quarter inch. .05 to .15 of an of this of rain. first thing in the morning, grab your umbrellas and make sure you give yourself extra time to get some work. upper 40s to the low 50s. it is going to be wet as i said and then tomorrow afternoon scattered showers so you will still need the rain gear. upper 50s to the mid60s. a cooler day. half moon bay 58 degrees, 64 palo alto and concord, antioch, 66 santa cruz and 64. here is a look at the game forecast for game four of the a's mariner's game. a chance of some showers and
